What January means in my world

Dear Diary,
It’s January again. The time when my student load doubles without adding more time to the day. Caffeine is my constant companion.  Not only am I experiencing the highest volume of student work inboxing, I am experiencing the 3rd highest new enrollment start (after early Sept and early June).

These are the days when Suzy Q can be on my enrollment list twice because she is both outgoing and incoming. These are the days when I’m really glad my adjunct positions at 2 colleges don’t start quite yet.

Sometimes this feels like at long last Game of Thrones can proclaim winter is no longer coming.  Winter is here.

Today is the day when my own children are on their last day of vacation and I am scrambling like a mad woman.  I’d rather be playing with them, but I must soldier on.

Today is that day that each year I question the number of preps I’ve been given as 5 becomes 10 for an overlapping month.  Thankfully some of these are AP courses and not offered year round.

Today is the day when colleagues, dear friends and loved ones who want my attentions shall receive a smile and an absent pat or tap of the keys to form a smiley face I do not actually emote.

It’s January again.

Once more unto the breadcrumbs, dear friends, once more;
Or close the firewall up with our Red annotating stylus pen.
In peace there’s nothing so becomes a student
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of inbox alerts blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the teacher;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour’d rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the download speed of the internet
Like the brass cannon; let the browser o’erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O’erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill’d with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every window
To his full screen. On, on, you noblest Browser.
